Key differences in our faith are overlooked
Oct 15, 2011
I found Dr. Haynes's column on Arminianism in the October 14, 2011 issue to be extremely interesting and informative.
I was raised in a Southern Baptist church and have been a United Methodist for 11 years. I read a lot and coordinate children's ministries and small group studies for our church. I suspect a lot of the Christian books and curriculum out there reflect a Calvinist view which is so pervasive that we don't even recognize it.
It concerns me that we may not understand nor be able to articulate a key difference in our faith tradition. One change I have made is to select a Vacation Bible School kit that is "grace-focused" rather than "salvation-focused". I believe this ensures that the content is more compatible with our theology and it also offers a distinct choice from what other churches in the area are providing.
I hope to see more on this subject as well as suggestions for how we can grow in our understanding of this important doctrine.
